pen, and the grain in the two pens
was completely cleaned up (grincos
and Microtus are partly responsible).
I filled pans of scattered grain, with
Hen-Chow nearest the water hole,
Pigeon Grains in a pan in CD-4.
The eucalyptus, especially in D-4,
has put out considerable growth,
and droppings indicate that this
crush is one favorite loafing/roosting
site. 1025. On leaving the Behav-
in Lab, I saw an adult pair with
10 chicks 3-4 weeks old. They did
not fly when I got out of the car
to open the gate, but only ran, without
great commotion to the edge of the
road — the 8 went to the right,
the 9 to the left. I stopped to
write these notes just outside the
gate, and the whole brood ran
back to join the 8 near the
gate, the 9 following. These
chicks appeared slightly smaller
than the Silver Quail in the pen,
perhaps 2-3 days younger.
