California Quail.
Sept.5. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda Co.
1708. An adult pair and 4 or 5 immatures
came into A-10 along SE fence - one bird
either imm. or ad. f - pub. the latter,
since the Green Brood when last seen did
not appear to be near completion of molt.
Assembly call heard outside the pen.
1710 Silver Brood fraying at edge 8
weeks in E-6. 1711 A single "Cow!" call,
either inside the pen or very close to it.
$3 $ and 4 chicks moved into D-8.
1715 $5 f joined the rest of Silver family -
another f under the E-9 eucalyptus (why
me f can be with group in A-10, then).
Sept.9. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda Co.
0940. On arrival at the Behavior
hab. pen, saw the complete group
of quail in the pen feeding together
as a covey, counted 16 well-grown
birds plus the four 4-week chicks.
This indicated 7 survivors of the Green
brood, although no more than 6
times been counted at once for
several weeks. Another family of an
adult pair and 4 immatures were
sitting on the top edge of the pen
just above the penned buds.
