California Quail.
Sept.2. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County.
1048. 03 & and 4 chicks to water hole, all
chicks drank; a & and another & remained
in cover nearby. 1057. Traversed the
entire pen at 10 foot intervals to
locate birds. Flushed 14 large birds
in the South corner - the last a &
which fluttered as if unable to
fly; one & had previously gone
into the North corner, accounting for
7 adults Orange brood of 2, and
Green brood of 6, also 2 chicks
flew from B-7 eucalyptus - I sus-
ppect the other two of this brood
ran off unseen. New brood of
Blade & not seen at all - probably
hidden near where the & fluttered
If; I do not understand why
they have remained hidden all
morning, but cannot believe the
whole brood (6 at least count)
could have been lost without trace.
