California Quail
Sept.2. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County.
cover after I finished working inside the pen
0928. A β feeding in A-9 with at least one
chick, 2 a 3 others glimpsed nearby; the
adult β feeding very little, mostly guarding.
0951. This group remained in the same
area; ident. β as δβ, counted 4 chicks
(3-weeks old). A β also appeared briefly
in this area; β perched on B-7 eucalyptus-
0954 A group of immatures feeding in
B-10. 1000 Three Silver chicks to water
hole, two drank; fourth chick peering
at base of B-7 eucalyptus where δ3 β
is still perched. 1004 δ3 β flew to
ground; chicks ran under shrub.
1015 δ3 β flew back to perch on B-7
shrub, then down again to feed in B-8.
1017 6 immatures & a probable
ad. β feeding in B-9. 1022 Another
ad. β joined Silver β and brood for a few
minutes, feeding with no interaction, then
returned under B-7 shrub. He appeared
to be Red (same doubt). A third β
in B-9 near the group of immatures
should be Green - where is Orange?
1030. δ3 β to water hole, another β
nearly did not drink. Then a β joined
the Silver brood and β; this β was
noted to eat blossoms of Picris echioides.
