California Quail.
Sept.1. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County,
1715. About 10 birds flushed from A-1
in the Behavin half pen and flew to
far side of the pen - all adults or
large immatures. 1728. Ad. ♂ in A-7
gave several assembly calls, answered
by a bird outside of the pen, about
6 immatures and another pair of adults
foraging in this same area. 1746
The Silver family - ♂, ♀, and 4
two-week(?) chicks came to water hole,
at least 3 chicks drank. Black ♀
also came out to feed in the same
area - she made several rapid short
rushes in different directions - per-
haps trying to catch insects - but
had no chicks with her. 1755 Silver
family & Black ♀ feeding together, counted
only 4 chicks again, could be some of
both breeds. Red ♂, Yellow ♀ and
Orange ♂ not seen for certain - are
extra ♂ with Green part of the time.
Sept. 2. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County:
0845 Several birds outside the pen at
the north corner as I approached, and
3 a 4 birds inside congregated just
across the fence from them. All
birds remained completely hidden in
