California Quail
Aug. 31. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County.
1930 A number of adult or nearly grown immatures in the Behavin half pen: Green & Orange & , and their broods, at least seven, possibly 8 immatures, and Silver pair without any chicks. Three different chases seen in three minutes, one adult & pecked viciously at the head of an immature. All birds running around actively, so could not count to separate the two age groups. 1939 Green feeding with immatures, all of an age! 4 & 7 and 2 & 9. 'Red-Yellow' pair under E-9 eucalyptus. Orange & in dust bath chased two immatures who attempted to dust. Several birds noted to pick up and then drop the dried peas of the Pigeon Grain mixture - food may be rather short for this many birds.
These two broods, as to size and degree of adult plumage, represent quite accurately the majority of the birds seen at or the recent field trips at Hastings and McMillians, except that there may have been more birds in the field that had completed their post-juvenile molt.
