W. J. Francis 1963. California Quail Aug. 30. McMillan Ranch, San Luis Obispo Co. 0855 Bunch of 12 to water, only 3 of which were sub-adult in plumage. The large covey plus several (6?) of other birds have retreated over the hill, many calls still heard. 0905. An ad. ♀, after remaining on the slope giving occasional calls (often an abbreviated 2-note assembly in a low tone) went to water, and ran off as Brown Tashies flew nearby. On the third approach, at 0908 she finally drank. Calls of other birds now quite distant. 0921 13 birds in 3 groups: 1 ♂ - 2 min. ♂♀; 1 ♂ with ♂♀ 4 nearly grown imm.; family of 5, not distinguished, apparently all immature. Young ♂♀ of 2 ages - from slight black & white lines, to nearly full black throat. An adult ♂ chased an immature 0928 3 birds: ad. ♀, imm. ♀ and ♂, over 8 weeks. 0935- 4 birds: ad. ♂♀, imm. ♂♀, about 8 weeks. (Watch error - rewound at 0938 watch time). 0942. All quail sounds have ceased. 0951. Distant assembly calls heard. (Time correction - add 8 minutes to times after 0935-.) Ginger reports no quail at lower spring.
