W. J. Francis 1963 California Quail Aug.29. McMillan Ranch, San Luis Obispo Co. possibly a one-year old bird which has not yet molted. The other was an adult bird (part the 1 year-old molt) with completely & plumage except for a throat pattern similar to the 8 lent without solid black throat or solid white margin - both areas flecked with spots of lighter or darker. Aug.30. McMillan Ranch, San Luis Obispo Co. 0810 Began observations from blind at Wanna Spring, having disturbed about 150 quail when approaching which walked up hill into the brush. 0825 Ad. pair with 1 imm 3/4 grown - 8 weeks, showing beginnings of 8 markings. 0840 after gradually increasing calls, in- ccluding squill notes, a large bunch of birds appeared on the hillside up the canyon to the left. Counted 64 as they came down the path, and drank at the water hole; all birds about full-grown, most with complete adult plumage. 0845 Male birds in loose groups on opposite hillside, more or less mingled with the preceding - birds were startled before I could get a good count.
