California Quail
Aug.29. McMillan Ranch, San Luis Obispo Co.
possibly a one-year old bird which
has not yet molted. The other was
an adult bird (part the 1 year-old
molt) with completely & plumage
except for a throat pattern
similar to the 8 lent without
solid black throat or solid white
margin - both areas flecked
with spots of lighter or darker.
Aug.30. McMillan Ranch, San Luis Obispo Co.
0810 Began observations from blind at
Wanna Spring, having disturbed about
150 quail when approaching which
walked up hill into the brush.
0825 Ad. pair with 1 imm 3/4 grown - 8 weeks,
showing beginnings of 8 markings.
0840 after gradually increasing calls, in-
ccluding squill notes, a large bunch of
birds appeared on the hillside up the
canyon to the left. Counted 64 as
they came down the path, and drank at
the water hole; all birds about full-grown,
most with complete adult plumage.
0845 Male birds in loose groups on opposite
hillside, more or less mingled with
the preceding - birds were startled
before I could get a good count.
