Aug.29. McMillan Ranch, San Luis Obispo Co.
gives the following totals: 220 in
first large covey; 215 in later
groups, total 435. Summary
of Gürge's observation, with no
repeats: 231 birds counted -
about 80 to 100 flushed as 0
approached, probably all previously
Counted. Grand total. 790 quail.
1115 to 1215 made a short col-
lecting trip over the hillside above
Marion Spring - flushed many birds,
one or two family groups and single
birds under separate bushes. Collected
one adult ♂ and one immature ♀, then
stopped because of the difficulty of
separating adults from immatures -
one wounded bird could not be located.
1845 to 1945 made a car trip over
the immediate sand area - a covey
of about 70 feeding near pasture gate
flew over the ridge toward the house;
only a few birds around Marion Spring;
an estimated 150-200 in three
groups at the old house. Saw a
single pair on the slope north of
the canyon gully bounding the west
pasture, and collected both -
one ♂ with immature plumage,
