W.J. Francis 1963. California Quail. Aug.29. McMillan Ranch, San Luis Obispo Co. 0859. 49 birds counted going to water trough, scattered by a jackrabbit. 0906 Major part of this covey has re- treated on the hill, with several small sub-coveys still in the area or approaching - pair of jays again scattered birds near the water trough by flying low over them and screaming. 0915 Counted 65 birds going to water trough - scattered with about 35 others which were still approaching. These 100 birds are all in addition to the larger covey. Observed a short cockfight with 4 encounters involving 3 birds. 0930 Counted 183 birds to water, then a jackrabbit scattered them. Nearly half of these birds were in separate family groups, averaging about 10 to a group, a little younger than the larger coveys, but a minimum age of 8-9 weeks. Partial molt generally incomplete in these broods. I then left the blind to check on Ginger's observation post, and on returning at 0955 flushed about 30 birds from the water hole. Left the station at 1005. Summary of counts allowing for about one-half repeat visits
