California Quail
Aug.29. McMillan Ranch, San Luis Obispo Co.
0817. Another string of birds coming
down the path, after some had
moved out - I estimate this is
7 branches averaging 30 each, all-
together so far. Probably 200 birds
in sight at once at the spring and
over the facing hillside. Continual
duckleiry, low assembly calls, and
occasional loud assembly and squall
calls, 0835. Counted 136 quail going
to watering trough, before they scattered,
with at least half as many or more
(70-100 birds) still over the hill-
side. The birds scattered somewhat
as a young coyote appeared on the
hill down canyon and then came
and drank just across the fence.
The quail did not fly away, and
even returned to the water within
10-15 feet of the drinking coyote;
the latter made no attempt to
molest the quail in any way but
returned up the hill after drinking.
0948. Another count of 164 birds to
water, then scattered. 0852. 45 birds
returned to water trough, then scattered
as two jays flew over giving loud cries.
