Aug.29. McMillar Ranch, San Luis Obispo Co.
0753 Took station in blind at Marion
Spring for observations of quail watering:
on the way to the blind noted a
large covey near the gate in the
pasture fence - about 25-30 birds
under the trees, and another bunch
estimated at 100 over the crest of
the hill. 0800 Single adult & to
drink - along with young meadowlarks, many
towhees, finches and mourning doves.
0809. 29 birds from hill to left;
large groups all up the hill along
this path; 25 birds from hill
directly opposite. Large coveys are
in subcoveys of about 30 birds each,
and there are at least 4 such sub-
coveys, perhaps 5, at the spring now.
These birds are all essentially full
grown, many with adult plumage not
quite complete, others of this year's
crop in complete adult plumage - 40
birds noted less than two months old.
