California Quail
Aug. 28. McMillan Ranch, San Luis Obispo Co.
1630. Began observations at the blind
at Marin Spring.
1640 8 + 8 imm. nearby group crossed
hillside, followed by ad. pair + 2 imm.
As this group came to water-hole, the
spring appeared about 3/4 grown, 2 8 8
showing half-developed throat markings,
mat 1 the other birds smaller, may
have been a younger brood. 1648 all
young left with one 8, the pair followed
as one more 8 came to drink.
1651 ad. 8 + 1 imm. 9, nearly adult plumage.
1652 Quail scattered as cattle came to drink.
1730 Cattle finally left the spring area.
1737 More cattle to water-trough,
ended observations.

3 ad. 8 8
1 ad. 9
11 immatures, 3/4 grown (2 ages).
Observations by Giger at the ranch
house water-hole : (1640 - 1740).
8 ad. 8 8, with
40 8 imm., and
40 unaccompanied immatures.
(Some 9 9 may have been overlooked
as large immatures). 8 of the
immatures were only 1/2 grown - late
