0835 - 1 ad. ♂.
0845 - 17 immatures (some adults
included) near road, and a
covey of about 30 up the hill
about 100 yards.
0850 - 1 ad ♂ - sentinel position.
19 plus 9 young flew
into the gully.
0855 - 1 ad. ♀ (0850) flushed with
about 30, mostly immatures, into
oak trees.
0900 - 25 full-grown or nearly so.
0925 - 2 birds near guzzler #3.
Summary of quail seen in
this morning, Staeratura:
149 birds, largely immatures,
in 6 coveys of 17 to 30 each.
2 lone adult ♂
53 birds in family (or com-
bined 2-family) groups, only 6 of
these identified as adults. Of the
young, 19 were classed as ½ grown
(late July hatch), 4 as ¾ grown,
and 23 too large to classify clearly
separate from adults by size.
The birds in coveys were not
separable by eye into age classes
in the numbers encountered.
