California Quail)
March 21. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda Co.
after which yellow & resumed feeding
for one minute, then remained motion-
less with the other until a total of 12
minutes had elapsed, then all re-
seemed feeding.
1615. Red O mounted Blue &
as she squatted with wings partly
spread, & copulated for about 10
seconds. All three birds then wandered
back into thicker grass cover.
March 22. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda
County, Calif. 0620 Heard assembly call
from a distance, while observing in
pen in Behavior Lab. 0710 Since
quail in pen have shown no activity
and it is an hour past sunrise I am
entering pen to determine roosting
places. Seven birds seen from vicinity
of large Eucalyptus in E. corner-
most first seen on ground; later the
last (yellow & ) flew from this same
tree. The seven remained together
while running pan ace; after I returned
to the Ovo. Hotel, saw 2 O together
in the N corner, who flew to cover in
tall grass on NE side, where others were
last seen. Discontinued Ovo. at 0730.
