California Quail
Aug.27. H.L.M.R., Monterey County, Calif.
have completed their post-juvenile molt.
Six other quail apparently full
grown were noted in and under an
oak tree on the same hillside.
1940. On a second stop, at the
same water point, I flushed a
♀, a (probable) ♂, and 8 young
no more than half-grown, about
6 weeks. No more quail seen
in the trip totalling 8.7 miles
of back roads over two turns.
Aug.28. HLMR, Monterey County. 0725 to
0755 Many birds scattered around the
water point (#1). An adult ♀ and 11
immatures nearly grown or long over the
spring; 30± birds flew from spring
area. Birds flushed in small groups
all over the hillside as I walked
around the spring including one group
of 5 only half-grown, another of 4 ¾
grown, most of the others full grown
or nearly so. Following noted in
road census covering 7.3 road miles:
0815- 4 immatures.
13 immatures.
5 birds including (♀).
0825- 2♀ 1♂ and 14 half-grown.
