W. J. Francis 1963 California Quail. Aug.26. Hasting Reservation, Monterey County. 1817. The covey of 8 gradually moved toward the larger covey and the groups mingled. I could identify certainly only 2 adult 8 at 2 of the 8, and only one adult 8 in the covey of 16. Most of the others appeared to be immature. Another count gave 17 and 8, the two groups slightly separated. Another brush were heard in the brush on the hillside below the instrument shelter. Aug.27. Hastings Reservation, Monterey Co. 0800 to 0930 observation at the pump where ground water was available from seepage revealed neither sight nor sound of any quail. Aug.27. Hunter Liggett Military Reservation, Monterey County. 1810 Flushed an adult 8 and 10 3/4 grown young along the roadside; another group of birds calling in the brush nearby. 1915. 14 quail mixed up the hillside near water point #1, 10 8A, 2 99, and 2 not determined - all full grown, but probably one or two broods which
