California Quail
Aug. 22. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda Co.
1415 Black & with drury chicks - count
of 10 including two following a & in area
A-4, foraged down to South corner.
Eight birds in a group, including
2 adult & 1 adult &, and
immatures of both sizes, in A-10 and
B-10, and a third & near Black &
and chicks. 1424 One & chased
another back and forth in A-10 for a
total distance of 40 feet. 1427
Black & and & chicks of youngest
brood drank at the water hole.
1431 Black & dusted 3 & the chickens
followed her to dust bath but only
pecked at the dirt - either for grit
& or food items wiped in the dust.
1434 Q3 & to water hole with 4
chicks of his brood - these are readily
separable from the younger brood by
the development of wing feathers which
is quite advanced. A & with chicks
was glimpsed in weeds in C-8 - do not
believe this was Black, since at 1439
she was again noted foraging with
chicks in D-3. 1442 Another pair
in A-4 was joined by 6 immature
birds - probably all Green brood.
1444 & in A-4 identified as Green,
moved to A-8 with 3 imm &; then
