California Quail
Aug.20. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County.
and approached the North corner, and
the Q there at once flew down to
the east corner, while the birds
outside all ran down along the fence
through the thistles. The group must
have exceeded 20 birds - apparently
the same combined families seen a
few days ago perched on the pen.
The Q in the corner did not flush
until I came within 10 feet - she is
Yellow by elimination - perhaps is
attempting to lay, at this date? No
sign of even preliminary nesting
attempts where she was seating.
The Q was probably Orange, since
Red was seen to leave, $3 is with
his chicks in B-9; Black Green
was recently with his brood in E-3,
and it might have been he.
Aug.22. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda Co.
10:54. No birds in sight in Behria
lab pen on arrival - damp, cool,
cold windy conditions. 10:02. All
quail have remained completely
hidden in cover in last 30
minutes of observation without
disturbance.
