California Quail
Aug.20. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County.
1611 Numerous chips & clucks heard from
in back of D-4 eucalyptus, and several
assembly calls outside the pen.
1622. Pair with drum chicks in B-9,
then Black & with chicks came to C-7,
then to water hole with 10 or 11 chicks,
are obviously the older (Silver) brood.
Green & to clearing with 7 immatures, 4 BB and 2 [illegible] with
one doubtful, probably F. 1625 A
squil call and several assembly
calls outside. 1626 12 chicks with
Black &, only 2 appeared to be from
Silver brood; several chicks including
some of Black's, saw over to Silver pair
as they approached the water hole.
1630 Silver pair to C-10, followed by
4 chicks of own brood. Black & to
D-7 weeds with apparently all of her
own chicks (10 by previous counts).
1633. Many Chicks heard in North
corner; saw a large family
group in thistles just outside the
Pen, with a F inside in E-2.
Three separate exchanges of sharp
Squill notes. Red & left this
area, another & still there and
a (prob.) & in the corner of the
