California Quail
Aug. 19. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda Co.
one of the Orange immatures. 0927. φ3 ♂
chased both Orange immatures from
B-8 near his chicks. One Orange imm-
drunk at the water hole.
Aug. 20. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County,
1503. ♀ with brood of downy chicks (larger
Black brood) in B-9. 1510 ♂ and ♀ with
chicks in B-10 (Silver family?) and
(Green?) ♂ with 3 immatures in E-10.
1531 (Silver?) pair with 3 chicks ran
along fence in B-10. 1533 at least 4
Green immatures crunched at the base
of E-9 eucalyptus (in sunshine), another
joined them, and 2 or more other birds,
including an adult ♂ in back of bush.
1549 Black ♀ with chicks and φ5 ♀ with
chicks fed in center near waterhole and
a few chicks drank. I could count
only 13 definitely of the rather widely
scattered chicks with two broods mixed.
The primary quills are evident on the
older chicks, the younger are still
entirely down. φ5 ♀ with 4 chicks
left first to go under B-7 eucalyptus.
The other brood crossed B-5 and B-6,
then to A-5 where I got a good count
of 10 chicks as they all moved down
toward the South corner.
