W.J. Francis 1963. California Quail. Aug.18. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda Co. 0850 Both broods of large young feeding in the south corner of the Behavior lab pen, ran to cover when I entered the pen at 0800 to give water & grain. 0920 Green ♂ perched on B-7 eucalyptus as 3 of his brood drank at the water hole. 0930. ♂ came out of weeds in E-6, followed by ♂. Young Green ♂ flew up to B-7 eucalyptus and perched alongside of adult for a moment; Orange immatures in E-9. 0933 Two Green immatures drank at the water hole. 0945 3-4 Silver Chicks feeding in D-6 near edge of weed patch. Family Crossed to weeds in D-8 - counted only 4, one ♂ which was noticeably smaller. 0944. Black ♀ and her new chicks came out of weeds in D-6. Counted 11 chicks - apparently there is some mixing of the two new broods. As this brood followed the Silver family across D-8, Orange ♂ perched on the instrument shelter and 2 Orange immatures fed nearby. 0957 Two Orange immatures drank at the water hole.
