California Quail
Aug.16. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County,
not identified as such. 100S. Searched
unsuccessfully in B-4 and B-5 for sign
of the chick in difficulty. Then a
nest in A-5.
Aug.17. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County.
Observation beginning at about 1500,
no watch to time events. All
groups of birds visible at least in part -
mostly in southern quarter of the
pen. Silver family with about 5
chicks ran from B-4 under B-7
eucalyptus, and shortly afterwards
a single chick was seen in A-4
Three J8, one 4, 6 green imm.
all close together in A-5, with one
downy Silver chick nearby. The
young chick went over to the vicinity
of the nest in A-5, and the adult
4 could be seen moving, apparently
a little off the nest. Orange and
two imm. J8 separated from the
larger group. I can only be sure
of 6 Green immatures. Checked
nest in A-5 and found 4 brooding
newly hatched young, ten empty
shells, and one egg not hatched;
as I saw when both 4 and chicks
ran off as I approached closely.
