California Quail
Aug.16, Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County.
0940. Silver family to water, good count
of 6 chicks; then foraged across B-5.
at this time heard an exchange of
calls of 2 or more birds near, a
perhaps one inside, the pen - these
were in the pattern of the "assembly",
but the quality of the sound ap-
peared the aggressive "squirrel".
0953. After foraging in B-4 for last
10 minutes, Silver pair with 5 chicks
ran down behind B-7 eucalyptus, the
6th chick continuing to feed by himself
in B-4 and B-5. 0955. The Silver
adult pair ran rapidly back to B-4,
and ran about the area, looking
and calling - every indication they were
looking for the extra chick, which
was not in sight at this time. ♂
♂3 then flew to a perch on B-7
eucalyptus while the ♀ ♂5 joined
the other chicks in C-7. 1001 ♂3 ♂7
flew to ground with his family - no sign
of the other chick joining them.
There is continued activity of large
birds along the fence in A-10 and B-10,
with a ♀ and 2 adult ♂ seen. These
must be at least Green family and
Red-yellow pair - Orange and his
two are probably also here, although
