California Quail
Aug.15. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda Co.
This is the first time I have found her
off the nest since she began incubating
July 28. 0958. Black & feeding briefly
in A-8 then ran up pen and almost
directly to nest in A-5. The immature
period totaled 18 minutes after I arrived
at the pen, plus time before the nest
my arrival. 1003 4 with 6-7 downy
chicks at edge of weeds in D-6. 1008 A
number of adult and immature quail
in E-10, with the family outside perched
on top of the pen just above. 1014 The
quail family outside flew down from
the top of the pen to the edge of the
eucalyptus grove downhill to the SE.
1018 Two downy chicks feeding near instrument
shelters, no adults in sight; went
under D-4 eucalyptus. 1030. No further
activity, the quail appear to have taken
to their mid-day loafing cover.
Aug.16. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County.
0925 about 8 birds, adults and
immature, along fence in A-10 when
I entered the observation hut. Family
of about 10 immature perched above
this area on the outside edge of the
pen. 0933 Silver family on edge of
weed patch D-8 - no count of chicks.
