California Quail
Aug. 13. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County.
1609. Silver family took shelter under E-9
eucalyptus after feeding in its vicinity for
several minutes. 1618. A number of birds
including 2♂♂, one ♀, and several immatures moving about in A-10; one short
chase noted. ♀ with downy chicks into
D-8 weed patch. 1621 ♀3♂ in C-8, with
chicks nearby; again noted appearance
of one plume, with a grill sprouting
next to it. 1623 Incomplete count of
6 chicks as silver family moved
along edge of weeds in D-6. Very
loud assembly call heard nearby
outside the pen. 1632. Good count
of 7 chicks as silver family, with
♀ and ♀, moved up across E-3, then
down again. 1637 Green ♂ with 7
immatures in A-6, feeding. Joined
by Red-Yellow pair briefly, not autogamic.
1639 One immature Orange ♂ noted in A-10,
an adult ♂ in B-10, prob. Orange. 1640
a "Cow!" call from outside seen.
1643 Red ♂ pecked at two Green chicks as
they fed close together. 1648. Silver head
came to drink; ♀5♀ chased three
immatures very aggressively for 15 feet.
1640 ♀ still in nest in A-5.
