California Quail
March 21. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County,
Calif. Observations in Behavin lab, pen:
0845 ♂ and ♀ near gate, one flew
into tall grass nearby, one to the far
eucalyptus shrub. 5 quail motionless
along NW fence, within a space of 10
feet: a single ♂, then 2 ♀♀, then
2 ♂. 0900 The two males furthest
away fed on green leaves (clover?) for
about 1 minute. 1010 One pair along
NW fence, no others in sight.
1100 Quail have hardly moved a muscle
in this period, still standing in same
place, in same position; no others
appeared.
1325. 3 ♂ and 3 ♀ along NW
fence, moving about slowly. Yellow
♀ feeding on chicken feed in center
of pen. She was observed on 2
occasions to pick up a piece of
gain (cracked corn?) hold it & then
drop it. She then walked slowly
into tall grass at base of shrub
in front of observation window.
1335. Only one pair remained along
NW fence, ♀ Blue and a ♂. 1340
heared low Assembly calls; ♂
was observed to be standing very
erect + throat movement observed,
