W.J. Francio 1963. California Quail. Aug. 11. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda Co. into the eucalyptus. The hen was still on the nest in A-5, no sign of her nest, or chicks in D-8 where the new chicks was last seen. Aug. 12. Monday. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County, Calif. 0900 Hen incubating nest in A-5. 0934 Counted a ♀ with 5 im- matures (Green?) and a pair (Red- yellow?) running along fence in B-10. 0952. A number of downy chicks at edge of weed patch in C-8, with a ♀. There appear to be 6 to 8 chicks, no accurate count possible until they come into a clear space. 1001 A ♀ in E-10 chased the two 8-week Orange Chicks. 1008. Good count of 7 immatures with a ♀ (Green?) in A-9. Persistent assembly calls out- side of the pen. 1020 ♀3 ♀ with about 6 chicks drank at water hole, then moved into B-6, while ♀ and about 2 more chicks remained near water hole in C-7. 1024 This ♀, ident. as ♀5, came to water with 3 chicks (total of 9 in the brood); these much less active than those with the ♀. One chick stumbled approaching the water hole, then sat motionless
