California Quail.
Aug. 11, Strawberry Canyon, Alameda Co.
1824. Orange + 2 young feeding in A-4
as Red ♂ walked to next site, then
resumed feeding nearby. 1819 a group
of 2 ♂ and 4 immature ♀ of about
6 weeks perched on top of pen
above A-5 where Green ♂ chicks,
Orange ♂ + ♀ chicks, and Red-
yellow pair were feeding. I saw
two others "climb" the pen dry
starting at the bottom flutter
their wings while climbing at the
fence at the same time. There
were finally 8 young birds with
a ♂ and a banded ♀, the other
♂ having moved off. 1825 Red-Yellow
and Green family with definitely 7
chicks feeding industriously on A-5.
Orange + chicks recently in this
same area. 1828. Green ♂ chased
an immature ♂ - probably one
of his own, since the throat &
head markings appeared less
distinct than noted on the two
Orange young yesterday. 1830 As
I entered the pen, the family
over A-5 flew into woods, and
another large group of at least
20 quail flew from the north
corner of the pen down the hill
