California Quail
Aug.11, Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County,
clearing, part water hole. only one chick
with him - very small. 'I suspect a
brood has hatched today and only
this one is following the 8, the others
with the 4, perhaps still in the nest.
1750 03 8' and chick went into weeds
by the nearest post in area D-8.
1800 03 8 again came into clearing, this
time without the chick, then ran down
into weeds in C-8. He appeared to
have only one head plume, will a
short quill beside it. 1802. A 8' in
A-10 with about 6-7 chickens cannot be
Green. 1803 A male perched on the
top 4, the pen over A-6. 1808 Two
8's, one 4, and 6-7 immatures along
fence in A-6 - they came very close
to the nest site in A-5, with no
response being made. The pair
(Red-Yellow?) moved off, leaving
(Green?) 8 and chicks feeding to-
gether. 1812. Yellow 4 walked up
almost to nest site, then into A-4;
(Orange?) 8 with two immatures 8 8'
in B-8. 1813 Orange and 03 8 8'
to central clearing, the latter
following Orange rapidly - perhaps
"Chasing", but with the normal
aggressiveness.
