W.J. Francis 1963 California Quail Aug.7. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda Co. 0644 φ3♂ perched an instrument shelter for a moment. 0645 Green ♂ with 8 chickens (now six weeks old) feeding in A-2 and close to the hut, then moved down the fence line into A-6. All the chickens were giving "cheeps" as they fed. 0650 Another set of 2 "Caw!" calls from the A on top of the pen. 0654 A ♀ with a brood of about a dozen 6-week young foraging at the base in back of the pen (outside); may also have been a ♂ present. 0659 ♀ (Green?) flew to perch in B-7 eucalyptus, as brood of chickens foraged in A-9. 0703 An immature quail on top of the pen over B-4 - probably one of the brood noted at 0654. 0708 One immature saw-tits drank at water hole, then ran under B-7 eucalyptus. Several assembly calls outside the pen. 0713 Green ♂ flew down from B-7 perch and ran into weeds with his brood. 0716 φ3♂ ran past water hole into central clearing and began feeding, scarcely accompanied, then ran into cover in E-5 at 0718. 0740 after 22 minutes with no quail in sight, noted several immatures feeding in A-10.
