California Quail
Aug. 2. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County,
emerged from the weeds into D-8
0705— One 7-week immature has
joined Orange ♂ on top of the instrument shelter, a second on the ground below. The former young bird
has a small streak 1/2 block below his eye, but sex is not obvious even at this age. The pinkness of the
young bird's legs is in marked contrast to the dark-gray of the adult.
0715 Young bird flew down to ground from the shelter perch, Orange ♂ still there.
0718 As the Green ♂ moved across D-8, Green ♂ approached the two immatures, whereupon Orange ♂
flew down from his perch and made a very short chase—not much more than a threat followed by a short retreat by Green. 0722— Green ♂ stood feeding in center of pen, joined by φ3 ♂, and Green
male flew up to perch on B-7
enclosures. φ3 ♂ made 3 pecks at me while feeding too close to her, but no other interactions occurred.
A pair visible for some time in E-7 are Red ♂ (certainly) and Yellow ♂
(probably). φ5 ♂ has not been seen today 2 for some days past.
