California Quail
July 31. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County.
1125 φ3♂ crossed from E-8 to water
hole (alone), drank, and went at
once under B-7 eucalyptus. Green
brood is no longer in sight, Green ♂
still on the same perch. 1128 Green
♂ flew to ground and ran into
weeds in B-9, followed by brood of
chicks, then by another (φ3?) ♂.
1130 Cased observation from hut and
entered Xew pen. No nests were found,
3 ♂♂, 2 ♀♀, and the brood of 8
chicks were flushed in A-10, the
other 9 still on the nest in A-5. This
accounts for all birds except Orange ♂
with 12 six-week chicks, and
? indicates certainly that no other
hens are incubating, probably none
laying, and second pair bonds are
weak or dissolved.
Aug. 2. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County,
0640 On arrival at Behavin hah pen

chicks, and Red ♂, who walked
over very close to nest site in
A-5. Then down the fence line
An aside ♂ at top of the pen in
B-4.
