California Quail
July 29. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County.
2020 Red ♂ came from E-8 to feed
in central clearing. After going
to top of the two instrument shelters
in succession, at 2025 he flew into
the E-9 post. 2027, ♂ ran from
D-1 to dust in the dust bath, and
at 2032 flew into D-4 post. ♂
checked and found ♂ in the nest
in A-5, left at 2035.
July 31. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County,
1015 ♂ on nest in A-5. ♂ and 2
immatures flew from this area to A-10.
1050 ♂ and several (>4) chicks in
A-10, another ♂ in "grace" post in D-9.
1103 ♂ in A-10 (still) ident. as Green.
1108 Green ♂ perched on B-7 eucalyptus as
his brood fed nearby. 1112 Brood of 8
chicks (5½ weeks old) drank at water
hole and fed in center clearing. These
appear to have juvenile plumage complete,
adult body shape, well developed metrics,
and length about 3/4 that of an adult.
1115 Three of these chicks were feeding in
one spot, jostling and shuddering each
other, and two stood erect and pecked
at each other 3 or 4 times, without, however,
any of the jumping up motion of
a typical cock fight.
