W.J. Francis 1963. California Quail July 29. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County. 120 No birds in sight when I arrived at the Behavior lab. per. 1240 Quail have all re- maind hidden except for a β glimpsed 3 times in the South corner. 1242 Checked nest in A-5; ♀ on 11 eggs still, indicates definitely incubating, probably began yes- terday - projected hatching date Aug. 19. 1902 αβ ran rapidly across the pen to E-8 unaccompanied, as assembly calls heard from other birds. 1923 β with 5 or more half-grown young moved across lower edge of pen to E-10 and up NE fence. 1930 Green β and 8 half-grown chicks (34 days) foraging in center clearing; β flew to top of instrument shelter as chicks retreated to edge of weed patch. 1944 Green β flew down to join chicks in E-5 and E-6 weed patch. 1953 A number of birds are running around in the east corner, at least 2 βs, 1 ♀ and several chicks. 2004 The two 6-week immatures came from B-9 to central clearing, and a β perched on top of B-7 eucalyptus. The two chicks then ran to the eucalyptus and climbed through the branches to perches near the top. At 2010 The three flew down to B-9. 2014 Green family in E-9.
