California Quail
July 27. Hastings Reservation, Mariposa County,
off unobserved. 0730 As I walked under
the large oak near the house, I
disturbed several quail in the tree,
(pot. 2 pairs) then heard nearby
a series of chips and an assembly
call. I walked up the road to
the fence below the barn, and saw
six different pairs of adults. At 0740,
near the water hole in the gully,
most of these seemed to be giving
alarm calls & flying in the trees
along the gully. No young birds seen.
0752. A single ? by the Davis
wood pile. Others heard in Ceanthus
and Chamise brush on the ridge.
0905 Flushed about 20 birds
near the barn - there seemed to be a
number of nearly full-grown young,
but was unable to get a count.
1005 Many chips and clicks, some
assembly calls the last hour, but no
birds showed themselves along this
stretch of stream. "Cow" calls heard
on right bank of stream at this time.
1010 to 1015 Circled the stream
area and flushed a ? with
several nearly grown young, then
8 to 10 larger birds in a group
near the barn. This appears to
