July 27. Hastings Reservation, Marterey County,
0639 Two ? , one ? m read, into gully.
0642 Pair in front of house (same as 0637?)
0646 Pair in front of house (4 in eight).
0648 ? with 4 5-week chicks - birds
were startled + all ran to bushes together,
and a chase of one male by another.
A ? and one small bird glimpsed at
right edge of bushes.
0654 2 adult pairs to right of bushes,
may include one pair repeats.
0655- 2 other pairs in front of house.
Minimum of 5 different pairs, plus
? with 4 young seen.
0659 Adult pair ran up drive and
into gully - this is 3 pairs which
have moved away in this direction.
0707. Squirrels calls heard, with 2 groups
near edges of brush patch not in-
volves.
0709 Adult pair ran up road to right,
as birds feeding in front of the house
took care as Dick Root came by.
0714 The ? with young and an adult
pair ran up the road where an
assembly call was heard from the gully.
0725- No quail noises for 10 minutes;
15 birds seem to go up the gully,
at least 2 pairs + a probable brood
were also in this area and moved
