W.J. Francis 1963. California Owl! July 25. Hastings Reservation, Monterey County. As I left my observation point after a few minutes, a bird flew up into the oak trees (used as a roost by the covey last winter) and a series of "Plet!" notes were given by a bird on the ground. As I walked nearby, two other (?) birds flew. I am fairly sure I at least 2 pairs roosting here with the possibility of a pair with a wood nearby or also roosting. July 26. - 1128 Heard a bird flush from roadside brush at the lower end of the long field; then saw a single ? perched in a small tree at the creek's cdge, in "guardian" posture. On closer approach, he flew to an oak on the opposite hill, and gave a long series of clicks & chips, and a ? flew into the thickets in the gully & also gave clicks as if calling a brood; however the latter could not be flushed. 1750 A pair flushed from in front of new office and flew down to gully. 1800 Heard a number of birds around the old office and glimpsed several small chicks in the bushes then a pair followed by 3 nearly
