W. J. Francis 1963. California Quail July 24. HLMR, Monterey County. 1840. 8 of 1817 plus 9 and 14 nearly grown immature flew down from tree to ground. 1900. Single 9 at juzzle #3. 1940. Covey of about 30 quail on hillside above road. 1950. Pair plus 9 nearly grown young. 2000. Flushed covey of about 20, Pair with 6 4-week chickens Covey of 23 nearly grown. 2015 Pair with about 20 nearly grown young. Summary of third evenings counts: 8 adults with 67 young birds. 7 adults without young. 73 birds in coveys (adult + young). Road distance covered: 8.3 miles. July 25. HLMR. Monterey County. 0840 Saw only 2 guarding 9s on fence posts in circuit of the down roads as yesterday. 1015 A second circuit of roads beginning at this time and ending at 1125 gave the following counts: 1015: Family group with over 5 immature birds; Adult pair; heard squill calls.
