California Quail
July 24. Hunter Liggett Military Re-
servation, Monterey County Calif.
0945 Flushed about 100 quail
at artesian well seepage near cattle
watering trough. These appeared
to be adults and nearly full
grown immatures, with no very small
birds. 1000 lighted a pair along
the road with about 9 downy young,
not over a week old. No quail
seen at the two gullies visited.
About 1115 saw a ? along the
roadside on the San Antonio River
who went into cover, then flushed
when closely approached, followed
by a ?. No nests or young found,
in search of thistle clump where they
were flushed.
An evening drive over the same
roads gave the following observations:
1810: Pair without young
Single ?
? with 11 3-week chicks
Pair with 1 4-week chick.
1817: Pair without young.
? perched a brush (guardian).
1825: Two pairs with total of 15 young,
two sizes, about 4- and 5-weeks.
