W.J. Francis 1963. California Quail July 23. McMillan Ranch, San Luis Obispo Co. are adult a nearly full grown immatures and mix randomly when drinking and feeding around the spring. 0906 & with 3 5-week chicks. The birds were startled by something at this point and all flew a run up the hill a short distance into cover; I estimated nearly 200 birds around. Incessant overlapping assembly calls followed, and birds began returning to water in 2 minutes. This morning observations now appeared to have overlapped yesterday's sample, so I discontinued counts. 1100 Returned to the blind for mid-day observation. No birds in sight after cattle chasing. No birds seen until 1155 when 5- apparently full-grown quail noted on top of second ridge down canyon, and more frequent assembly calls heard nearby. 1200 Calls receded in the distance and no birds in sight, so ended observations. 1345 Left McMillan Ranch for Hunter Liggett Military Reservation at 1:45, mileage 43031.
