July 23. McMillan Ranch, San Luis Obispo Co.
0845 about 7 adults across fence, two
5-week chicks, one chased away,
0846 An adult ♂ chased and
scattered a brood of 5 5-week chicks.
0848 7 ad. ♂♂ and 3 ad. ♀♀.
0850 ♀ with 11 6-weeks young.
0852 ♀ and ♂ with 8 2-week chicks.
♀ with 4 6-week chicks.
0854 About 15 6-week chicks, with
2 ♂♂ and 1 ♀
0855 Two adult pairs.
0856 About 15-20 adults and immatures
around seepage up-canyon; a full-
ledged cock-fight between 2 ♂♂
here involving a dozen keeping
encounters and three chases before
the loser finally left the group.
Quail are now milling all over
the water holes and hill sides, so
that it is impossible to keep track
of any new arrivals. 16 of various
sizes - some smallest not quite
six weeks,- drinking together below
the water trough. Family groupings
are fairly loose now, although there
will every few moments be seen
a compact group with an adult
in charge moving to a from the
