California Quail
July 23. McMillan Ranch, San Luis Obispo County.
0745. at Marion Spring blind, about half-
a-dozen quail scattered as I approached,
and some assembly calls heard after I
settled in the blind; activity rather
low compared to other periods.
0750 Two pairs, about 12 4-week chicks.
0752 A pair across fence; the ♀ squatted
as the ♂ passed her, then got up and
ran after him. More calls heard.
0754 Same group as 0745, 14 chicks
counted at seepage up canyon.
0754 Pair at water trough.
0757 Pair with 10 5-week chicks.
0758 Adult pair at water hole.
0759 Eight 5-week chicks, with a
lone ♂ not too far away.
0800 Two adult pairs, 4 4-week chicks
0801 Pair with 14 4-week chicks to
water trough from up canyon. A
♀ cleared an older chick away
from water.
0803 Adult pair, plus imm. ♂ and ♀
barely 6-weeks old. One lone ♂.
0806 Pair with 6 6-week young resting
on sunny slope across the fence.
0807 A pair with 2 6-week young.
An occasional "Caw" call is heard,
along with frequent assembly calls
and nearly constant low chickering.
