California Quail
July 27. McMillan Ranch, San Luis Obispo Co.
Then joined the others at the water, the
two flocks intermingling. 1611 The
quail ran and flew into the brush
as a small herd of cattle (10) came
to drink at the water trough. 1626
Water trough again clear of cattle.
1631 a pair to drink, across the fence.
The ♀ walked up the hill into cover
(or shade) while the ♂ grazed among
[illegible] cattle droppings near the water trough.
at 1645, the ♀ returned to choose a
fend hay, then both went up the hill,
and returned at 1647, then up the
Canyon to the left.
1716 - ♂, 2♀♀, and 6 half-grown young.
1723 - A single ♂ from down canyon.
1723 - A nearly grown young ♂, from the hill.
1725 - Nearly grown young ♂; plumage
essentially adult except the head and
in complete black throat.
1728 - ♂ with 6 ¾ grown young joined
by a ♂ with 2 more young.
1729. - The young ♂ (1725) was chased
by the ♀ of a pair at the water-hole.
1730 - Two ♂♂ and two ♀♀ with at least
23 young nearly full-grown (sexes
distinguished by black as ♂).
1731 - Two young ♀♀, nearly grown.
