California Quail
July 22. McMillan Ranch, San Luis Obispo Co.,
where a pair with about 6 large
young are drinking. 1035 All
birds have scattered, few chips
and assembly calls really. 1040 No
quail in sight, calls have died
away in the distance - apparently
we have a mid-day break.
1115 At the water-hole in
front of the ranch house, adult
pair came to drink. 1116 ♀ left and
2nd ♂ came up, then 6 chicks
with retrices just developing (4 weeks).
Chicks, then ♂ drank, also a 7th chick.
First ♂ stayed nearby giving continual
series of chips in groups of 3 to 5.
Family left, and ♀ with 4 chicks
then a fifth came to water and all
drank, including the ♂. The ♂
made several pecks at one ♂
chicks that came near him.
1122. Two chicks drinking, ♀ nearby,
both ♂♂ at right.
— Back at Marin Springs blind
no birds were seen from 1510 until
1601, when a group of 11 came across
the opposite slope from the left.
1605 Pair + 16 chicks 3/4 grown.
" ♀ + 4 chicks 3/4 grown, plus a
♂ which remained on the hillside
