California Quail
July 22. McMillan Ranch, San Luis Obispo Co.
1016 5 adult ♂♂, 2 adult ♀♀, and
about 12 young from 3-7 weeks
at the water hole together. All
birds suddenly scattered.
1017 Three apparently adult ♀♀ to
water. 1018 2 ♂ and 1 ♀ came
down hill no chicks.
1020. Pair with 3 small chicks went
up canyon from upper seepage.
1021 8 ♂♂ and 1 ♀ resting in the
shade of the juniper opposite spring.
1023 Adult pair, 6 3/4 grown
young, and another ♀ at water.
1024 A ♂, and adult pair, and
a nearly adult young ♂ to water.
Then a mixed group of adult and
sub-adult birds, mostly ♂♂.
1026 4 adult ♂, 1 adult ♀♀,
1 subadult ♂, 1 subadult ♀ at water.
Note, adult pair to water from the left.
This is apparently the beginning
of covey formation — note that it
does not involve consolidation of
broods, but aggregation of individuals and pairs.

1030 Nine adults to water from

to water across the fence,
