W. J. Francis 1963. California Quail 161. McMillan Ranch, San Luis, Obispo Co. July 22. Strawberry Canyon, [illegible] County 958. Adult pair lone ♂ and ♀ nearly grown chicks at water. 959 Pair with 14 half-grown chicks from canyon to the left. 1000 Pair with 2 nearly grown young, 1001 Two adult pairs - no chicks. 1002 Two pairs with 12 or more half-grown chicks on hill to left. 1004 Two pairs with 6 chicks of two sizes - ½ to ¾ grown. ♀ with 8 half-grown chicks crossed hill as a ♂ chased another ♂ away from the vicinity. 1066 From 20 to 25 ¾ grown young around the water, with 4 ♂♂ and apparently only 1 ♀. 1067 Another large brood (est. 15) ♀ nearly grown young with one ♂ (♀ not seen) at water across the fence. These chicks over six weeks since ♂♂ are clearly distinguishable. There are now too many birds around to distinguish new birds from those previously counted, or to separate broods. Calls are continuous - mostly assembly calls. 1011 Counted a total of about 175 birds in sight at once. 1013 ♀ and 10 nearly grown chicks left water from canyon.
