California Quail
July 22. McMillan Ranch, San Luis Obispo Co.
nearly 8 may have been with
them. Two down chicks near
water hole, no clean attachment to
any adult. Continuous clucking, +
assembly and many quail calls
as many broods assembled near water.
0947 A Q made repeated rushes
and pecks at a brood of about
7 small chicks (about 7 weeks),
apparently trying to scatter them.
0948 Pair with 4 downy young, followed
by another Q.
0949 Pair leaving water with 7
downy young - returned, and a
recent showed 8 chicks.
0951 Q with 1 downy chick.
Pair with 3 nearly grown young,
followed by another Q.
0953 Mixed group, 2 Q, 10 nearly
grown young, Q nearby.
0954 At least 3 broods wiped at npt
side of water-hole, 6-8 chicks each,
nearly grown - much chasing.
0955 Group of 18 ¾ grown without
adults, accompanying them.
Again at least 150 birds in the
vicinity with continuous calling
and much interaction
