W.J. Francis 1963. California Quail July 22. McMillan Ranch, San Luis Obispo County, 0929 Seven quite small chicks to water, followed by a 9, then 2 835 and another 9 with 4 more chicks. These are quite small, with only sedimentary retrices as yet. 0931 Single nearly full grown 9 (plumage really adult, legs & feet pink) at water. 0934 9 with 9 chickens ½ grown - one appears to be a least a week older. An adult pair on hillside to the left. 0937 Another pair with about 5 large chickens mingled with the 0934 group, then retreated into the brush. 0939 Pair with 7 large chicks (4-5 weeks) Pair with 6 small chicks (3 weeks) Adult pair (same as 0934) 0941 Numerous Chasers and a few "squill" calls as Woodco slipped. 0942 7 large chicks to water with 9, 9 ready. Another male observed to peck at the nape of a very small chick several times. 0943. A rather compact group of 30 a near 3/4 grown chicks with 3-4 pairs of adults on the hillside 0945 Counted 24 in this group with one 9; a
