California Quail
July 22, McMillan Ranch, San Luis Obispo Co.
Very uncertain, but at a minimum as indicated. Several "Caw!" calls heard.
Pair with 8 large young came to water hole from canyon to the left at 0902. 0903 Pair with 5 large young on hillside above spring, one doing cliche nearby and an adult ♂ above him. Birds scattered at same alarm + then struggled back to water. 0906 Birds again scattered — I deliberately left blind to scatter them thoroughly in order to recount as they returned, and flushed, conservatively, 150 birds around the spring, mostly 3/4 grown young, few adult pairs without chicks. Increasing overlapping assembly calls were heard from all over the hillside for several minutes after this.
0915 Pair + 5 on hillside to right.
0916 ♀ + 11 under Juniper above spring.
0919 2 pairs with 5 chicks each, about ½ grown — smaller than others.
0922 Group of at least 17 on hill to left.
0924 Pair + 6 drinking across fence.
0925 ♀ with 11 going up-hill, ♂ on guard on a nearby shrub.
